Five police officers have been fired after dashboard camera footage surfaced showing them brutally beating a man who seconds earlier was flung from his car after a high speed chase in Birmingham, Ala., leaving him unconscious.
Mayor Larry Langford and Police Chief A.C. Roper told USA Today that these actions "cannot be tolerated." No charges have been filed against the officers yet.
Anthony Shannon Warren, the 38-year-old driver of the van who was beaten on Jan. 23, 2008, was shown driving over an officer in the beginning of the footage. Later, Warren lost control turning up a highway interstate ramp and flipped the car, being flung from it. This is when cops rushed out of their cars and began to barrage Warren with multiple strikes.
Warren, after being held under $1 million bond after the chase, pleaded guilty in March 2009 to first-degree assault and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Because of this no trial was held and the footage was not shown for over a year.
Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls told USA Today that race was not a motivation in the beating.
"Over 50 years of combined police experience gone over 11 seconds," Mayor Larry Langford told reporters.
